BCHO Grand Rounds: Medical Complexity in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) - The Challenge and the Reward

Presented by:

Ricki Robinson, MD, MPH

Clinical Professor of Pediatrics

Keck School of Medicine at USC

Co-Director

Descanso Medical Center for Development and Learning

Objectives:

Describe the diverse features of ASD across the “spectrum” based on age, gender, degree of challenge in core symptoms, cognitive function, co-morbidities, functional abilities and potential outcome.

Use observations and relationship-based interactions to identify those infants and toddlers with sensory/motor individual differences and social/emotional functional developmental delays which may require an ASD evaluation and potential referral.

Recognize significant changes in an ASD child’s behavior as symptoms for potential underlying medical/psychiatric co-morbidity, environmental and/or educational changes, and undiagnosed or unmet cognitive challenges.
